Specific Title: East Central Region-Regional Medical Director Location: IU School of Medicine Department: IUSM - Emergency Medicine Campus: IU School of Medicine Indianapolis Position Announcement: The Medical Director reflects the vision, and values of IU Health, the Indiana University School of Medicine, and the Department of Emergency Medicine. Core Responsibilities:
Collaborates primarily with hospital administration but also with local ED nursing leadership, emergency physicians and advanced practice provider (APP) staff to ensure the ED care delivery model achieves high quality emergency care and evolves to match the needs of the patients, the department, the hospital, and the community Ensures compliance with Hospital medical staff bylaws and all related policies and procedures. Recommends to the Medical Staff the criteria for clinical privileges that are relevant to the care provided within the ED and recommends clinical privileges for each member of the ED. Ensure appropriate credentialing, orientation, and training of providers in compliance with hospital policies and consistent with departmental needs. Assures sufficient faculty coverage for all activities of the clinical service and helps assess and recruit potential faculty. Helps recruit and assess key staff members, including preparing job descriptions and participating in probationary and annual performance reviews. Monitor patient experience and patient flow. Design and implement process improvement strategies to improve and optimize these areas. Maintains knowledge of The Joint Commission standards and guidelines as well as clinical standards for federal programs and state licensure agreements. Work to ensure effective communication between ED physicians and APPs and other hospital medical staff and each other. Have membership in or chair hospital committees as appropriate. These may include a medical staff executive committee and committees for disaster preparedness, critical care, quality improvement, case management, risk management, utilization review, etc. Maintain knowledge of facility human resources (HR) policies and procedures and work with HR and legal team when necessary. Participate in risk management activities including communication with facility legal representative(s) concerning relevant departmental issues. Work with ED staff to identify and mitigate areas of high risk. Identify and participate in, and/or provide opportunities for, ongoing focused education courses for/by the ED staff, as appropriate to the staff, patient population, and facility needs. Participates in strategic planning in the areas of clinical quality, patient safety, patient satisfaction and the provision of cost effective clinical services, helps prioritize proposed programs and services, and actively supports resulting strategies. Assists in developing and providing continuing professional education programs for the medical staff and support staff and serves as a liaison to residency program and clerkship directors in matters concerning resident and medical student rotations. Participates in developing and implementing the information infrastructure that will support sound clinical decision-making across the organization. Participates in ongoing quality improvement by developing, implementing and supporting organizational Performance Improvement and Patient Safety initiatives. Collaborates with the administrative team to measure, communicate and improve employee and physician satisfaction. Collaborates with the local administrative team to assure appropriate acquisition of new and replacement equipment and facility modifications to maintain a state—of-the-art and cost-effective clinical environment. Represents EM on assigned internal and external committees, task forces, commissions, agencies and promotional or public relations efforts regarding clinical affairs. Conducts Faculty Annual Reviews for members as assigned and required by the Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine. Responsible for assuring the medical student liaison is fulfilling and participatory in the duties of their appointed position. Assists Vice Chair of Research to assure the environment is conducive to research and scholarly activity. In addition, acts on their own to ensure such an environment.
