MORE ABOUT THE POSITION The University is looking for candidates with skills and experience in engaging with diverse stakeholders, developing and strengthening networks, and facilitating informal educational programs that generate rich exchange of ideas and knowledge. We are seeking an individual to help us connect and engage with people from a variety of agricultural and forest-industry backgrounds, community leaders, growers, Native American tribes, and other midwest Extension colleagues. The primary responsibility will be to develop relationships and deliver informal education in a variety of ways, including face to face and through technology. The goal of this engagement and education will be to facilitate applied research, discovery and learning about the economic, social and biological conditions that might make hybrid poplar plantations financially promising for fiber and energy.
The informal educational programs will emphasize creating awareness of and support for an innovative hybrid poplar bioeconomy. The Extension Educator will learn from and work with educators from multiple Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources (AFNR) content areas. The individual will also work with one of the nation’s leading research teams at the University of Minnesota Duluth Natural Resource Research Institute (NRRI), and will join a statewide team of Extension faculty, who deliver nationally-recognized programs to sustain our region’s natural resources.
ABOUT THE PROJECT Hybrid poplars (Populus spp) represent a promising long-term feedstock for biofuels and the emerging bioproducts industry. This project leverages the collection of Populus genetic material developed at the University of Minnesota Duluth-Natural Resources Research Institute (NRRI). The NRRI is 1) selecting promising genotypes based on past breeding and field trials from a 500+ clone germplasm bank; 2) establishing replicated clonal field trials in Minnesota, Iowa, and Indiana; 3) monitoring survival, growth, and disease resistance; and 4) assessing genotype-environment interactions to identify broadly adapted clones. Extension educational objectives include building an increased awareness about the economic, environmental and social conditions that affect the success of hybrid poplar as a feedstock for an emerging bio-energy/bio-products economy.
APPOINTMENT/BENEFITS 1. Funding is currently available for three years. This is an 80% position as an Extension Educator and renewal is dependent on local funding, program needs, performance, and results. 2. QUALIFICATIONS Education: Bachelor’s degree is required; Master’s degree is preferred. At least one degree must be in an agriculture, economics, forestry, natural resources or related discipline, i.e. agronomy, agricultural economics, bioengineering, forestry, wood products.
Required Skills/Abilities: * Demonstrated experience working with people from different cultures and backgrounds. * Proven ability to facilitate learning online and in-person. * Demonstrated capacity to develop and maintain positive working relationships with colleagues, partners and various stakeholders. * Skilled in Microsoft office programs such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. * Experience using technology for communication, information finding, teaching and report writing. * Demonstrated strong oral and written communication skills.
Preferred Skills/Abilities: * Experience within the natural resource and business development industry. * Knowledge and use of data systems to explain, tell stories about, and interpret natural resources, economic trends and land use. * Knowledge of hybrid poplar plantation management. * Experience developing and conducting educational programs. * Experience with evaluation tools documenting outcomes and impacts.
